Breaking the silence and stepping out from the margins
Those in power want us to feel overwhelmed and hopeless but our vision for a thriving future unites us - it's one of the most powerful tools we have.
I’ve been struggling to write my first article/blog/post here on Substack. TBH, I haven’t been able to get myself to write anything to anyone on any platform for awhile.
Well, at least not since November 5, 2024.
IYKYK. 🙄
When I decided to start Life Unraveled, I envisioned speaking about two truths woven into one journey. One which happens to us when the threads of life unravel while the other becomes our intentional exploration of the ‘undoing’ we’ve experienced.
Unfortunately, at this moment, we find ourselves in a state of heightened urgency to respond to what is happening to us from those in power who want us to unravel from intense feelings of overwhelm and hopelessness.
Also, as a queer, gender expansive, ex-evangelical fundamentalist, I live in the margins. And, the past two months of watching one executive order after another target marginalized groups and systematically dismantle our democracy (as imperfect as it may be) has left me in a state of bewildered fear and uncertainty.
It has also left me asking a series of questions:
Should I take a frontline stand until they arrest or disappear me?
Should I work to create an underground resistance movement in preparation for worst case scenarios?
Should I make plans to flee?
And, as I wrestled with these questions, I realized that one of the most powerful tools we have is our vision for a thriving future as we resist, reclaim and reimagine what could be.
So, inspired by many who are standing up and speaking out, I am choosing to step out from the margins and into the fight.
The silence ends now.
I’m pressing publish/post/send.
Because I believe that unraveling life—on both a personal and a collective level—is not something to be done alone or in silence.
Hell no. It’s better when we do it together.
